About the EcoLab

The EcoLab is a 55-acre wetland and lowland forest located on the north end of Marian College’s campus. The area encompasses a landscape designed in 1912 by Jens Jensen and is one of the best preserved Jensen landscapes in the world. Because Jensen used native plants in his design, now 100 years later, the EcoLab’s wetlands and surrounding lowland forest act as an oasis for native flora and fauna in the city. Beaver, mink, muskrat, fox, over 160 species of birds, and over 260 species of native plants have been observed in the EcoLab, located less than 10 minutes from downtown Indianapolis! The EcoLab is a wonderful place to learn about wetlands, environmental restoration, and the impact of humans on the environment. Marian College students use the Ecolab in their science and other courses and for general enjoyment – and so can you! The EcoLab is open to the public daily from dawn to dusk.
