Marian College offers a number of excellent opportunities to study the environment and the role of humans in it. B.S. degrees are offered in biology and chemistry with a major concentration in environmental science.

The Marian College EcoLab is used in almost every environmental class! This area provides a fantastic location for field studies. Students have studied the elimination of exotics, beaver channels, the effects of honeysuckle removal on native vegetation, the chemistry of ground and surface water, the success of an early 1900’s restoration project, and many other topics. They also are participating in designing and implementing the environmental restoration and education in the EcoLab.

Marian offers a variety of environmental science, biology and chemistry courses each year. Courses combine practical environmental applications with the strong theoretical underpinnings needed to be a successful environmental scientist or global citizen.

The job market for environmental science majors is good! As a result of the growing global population as well as the high level of per capita resource use in many countries (especially in the U.S.) the expanding need for workers with a background in environmental science is here to stay.

Students from other disciplines such as art, writing, and political science use the EcoLab in their courses as well.

Students using the EcoLab:

  • Student interns are learning from our restoration ecologist and environmental education coordinator while they get hands-on experience in the environment.

  • Students from University of Indianapolis, IUPUI, and Butler are visiting.
  • Education students are using the EcoLab for special projects.
  • Biology students are learning zoology, botany, ornithology, restoration ecology, conservation biology, and ecology in the EcoLab.
  • Students are doing research in the EcoLab.
  • The possibilities are endless. We are always looking for good students! Do you know of any students who would like to get involved? Let us know!
