“Coming to Marian University has been a blessing. I’m able to pursue my major and still participate in two things I’m passionate about—cycling and show choir. These experiences have enabled me to work with people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, ideas, and lifestyles, while obtaining a liberal arts education, all of which I feel is helping me to become a more well-rounded, complete person.”

John Hoopingarner was originally attracted to Marian University because of the accomplishments of the cycling team under the direction of Coach Dean Peterson. Peterson has led the cycling team to 12 of its 20 national championship titles including the 2012 USA Cycling Collegiate Track National Championship and the 2013 USA Cycling Collegiate Cyclo-Cross National Championship. Winning those national championships with the cycling team are some of Hoopingarner’s favorite memories. Hoopingarner was also attracted to the university’s outstanding show choir, currently under the direction of Elizabeth Hearn. The show choir is the newest vocal ensemble at Marian University and the singers major in many different disciplines, but all share the same passion for music, dance, energy, and showbiz. The show choir serves as the flagship ambassador ensemble, reaching out to the city, the state, and beyond. Hoopingarner is the lead Power Booster instructor teaching classes to the public in the Paul J. Norman Cycling Center on campus. The Paul J. Norman Cycling Center is a state-of-the- art cycling training center.

“Marian University is presenting me with an excellent education, as well as life-changing opportunities outside the classroom. The classes are great and I’m learning a lot. And living in Indianapolis provides a way to apply my newfound skills in practical settings. I plan to become an athletic trainer and work with performance athletes and there are countless career opportunities here in Indianapolis.”
